Cat Clarke - Social safeguards specialist
Cat is an environmental anthropologist with 10 years’ experience in the NGO and research sectors. She has expertise in rights-based conservation, social safeguards and participatory approaches. Her work with TLLG focuses on providing technical support on the application of Environmental and Social Standards and best practices in the context of biodiversity conservation and nature-based solutions, including compliance reviews, advice on standard strengthening and design of free prior and informed consent (FPIC) protocols.
Cat has significant experience collaborating directly with Indigenous peoples, local communities, and their representative organisations on conservation and human rights- related issues, including protected area policy and access restrictions, forest tenure reform, community-based monitoring and representative governance.
She is currently completing her PhD at UCL which examines the implementation of area-based conservation targets in the Colombian Amazon, including the associated risks and opportunities of OECMs for Indigenous peoples. Prior to this, Cat worked for several years (2017-2022) in Cameroon as Country Lead for Forest Peoples Programme (FPP). Cat serves as a Trustee for Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) and is an Associate with Forest Peoples Programme (FPP).
