Blue Action Fund Environmental and Social Management System

TLLG are working with the Blue Action Fund on the development and application of environmental and social safeguards in marine biodiversity conservation projects. A non-profit foundation based in Germany, Blue Action Fund has three government funding partners — Germany, through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in cooperation with KfW Development Bank; Sweden, through the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs; and France, through the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Created in late 2016, in response to the clear need for additional financing for ocean protection, Blue Action supports national and international NGOs to establish new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), improve effectiveness of management of existing MPAs, and support sustainable livelihoods in the adjacent coastal communities.

TLLG is working with Blue Action to improve and update the existing Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) with a focus on enhancing the practical application in the project cycle. This includes provision of advice and development of tools and templates for the identification, assessment and management of environmental and social risks and impacts typical to marine biodiversity conservation projects. The assignment aims to enable Blue Action funded projects to align with best practice international standards relating to stakeholder engagement and grievance management, social impacts and human rights, as a basis for sustainable and enduring marine biodiversity conservation.
