Development of an Environmental & Social Management System (ESMS) for the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust
The Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT) is a transboundary Conservation Trust Fund providing long-term funding support to parks and conservation organisations in the Prespa-Ohrid, Korab-Shara and Albanian Alps regions including ecological corridors between these regions. PONT aims to conserve the rich natural heritage of this region, and covers parts of Albania, Greece and North Macedonia.
PONT was originally established in 2015, and manages funding from different donors with the main funding coming from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) working through the KfW Development Bank. To bring PONT’s operations up to the standard of the KfW Sustainability Guidelines, TLLG worked with PONT to design and develop an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) aligned with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (2017), and other international standards and guidelines, and to develop practical procedures for PONT, Protected Area authorities and environmental actors to follow in order to manage potential environmental and social risks. PONT’s ESMS is now being implemented, financed by KfW.
